Here’s a special valentine
With lots of love for you
And you are very special!
Here are hugs and kisses, too!
Сompere 1: Hello dear boys and girls! Teachers and friends!
Сompere 2: We are so glad to see you here today!
Сompere 1:We are going to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day. We’ll speak about friends and friendship, justice and honesty. No one really knows the origin of this holiday. There are many legends about it.
Сompere 2: According to the legend  this day is connected with an ancient Roman Festival called Lupercalia. This was on February, 15 to honor the patron of husbandry
Compere 1: The next story tells us that St. Valentine was a priest who married young couples secretly when the Roman Emperor Claudius 2 forbade marriages. He believed that single men were better soldiers.
Сompere 2:Another story tells us about St. Valentine who was a good friend to children. He was against the Roman Gods and that is why he was put in prison. When he was imprisoned the children brought him loving letters. It was on February, 14. Some people think that is why we give friendly and loving  messages.
Romeo and Juliet ( a scene)
Author:  The story of Valentine’s Day begins in the third century with an oppressive emperor and a humble Christian martyr. The emperor was Claudius and the Christian was Valentinus.
Claudius had ordered all Romans to worship twelve gods. And it was a crime to be a Christian. But Valentunus was devoted to the ideas of Christ.

Senator:  You know that our emperor believes that there are 12 Gods, 12 Gods but not one. If you disobey, you will be put into prison.
Valentinus: There is only one God, that’s Christ, Jesus Christ. And we should pray to him. Nothing can keep me from practising my  beliefs, even the threat of death.
Senator: How dare you? Guards, put him into prison!

Jailor: (walks up and down the stage looking at Valentinus working at the table. He has a bunch of keys in his hands):
He is reading, reading and reading. He is a man of learning. I’ll ask him for permission to bring my poor Julia for lessons. My poor daughter is blind, she has been blind since birth. She is a pretty girl with a quick mind. Let him open the light of knowledge to her. (To Valentinus):
Sir, could you teach my girl? She is blind, my poor girl.

Jailor: This is Julia, my daughter. Julia, this is Sir Valentinus. He was so kind as to agree to teach you everything he knows.

Valentinus: Julia, you are a very pretty young girl. I admire you. You are very clever and I’m glad to have taught you all I know. You are an excellent pupil!
Julia: Oh, Valentine, I’m happy to hear such lovely words. It’s so kind of you. Thank you so much for your lessons. You’ve taught me arithmetic, you’ve read me so many stories of Rome’s history. You’ve described me the world of nature. Now you see the world through your eyes. I trust in your wisdom and find happiness in your quiet strength.
Valentinus: Julia, all I’ve taught you is very important, but the main thing I’ve done for You is that I have told You about God.
Julia: Valentinus, does God really hear our prayers?
Valentinus: Yes, my child, he hears each one.
Julia: Do you know what I pray for every morning and every night? I pray that I might see. I want so much to see everything you’ve told me about!
Valentinus: God does what is best for us if we only believe in Him.
Julia; Oh, Valentine, I do believe. I do.

Julia: Valentine! I can see! I can see!
Valentinus Praise be to God.

Valentinus. Jailor! Here is my letter to Julia. Could you hand it to her?
Jailor. Certainly. I’ll be glad to fulfill your last wish.
Valentinus. Thank you very much.

Julia. Dear Julia, it’s my last note to you. I love you and I urge you to stay close to God…    From your Valentine. The 14th of February, 270.

Сompere 1: There are many symbols of this holiday.
1)    Heart.  Emotions are feelings such as love, happiness, anger, or fear. A long time ago people believed that all the emotions were found in the heart.  The heart is still a symbol of love ; it is also a symbol of Valentine’s Day.
2)    Red Rose.  The rose was the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. Red is a color that stands for strong feelings. That is why the red rose is a flower of love.
3)    Ribbons.  Ribbons go back to the days when ladies gave ribbons to their favorite knights when they went to war.
4)    Lace.  Lace comes from a Latin word; it means “to catch”.  Hundreds of years ago women carried lace handkerchiefs. A man nearby might pick it up and return it to her. Sometimes a woman might see a man she wanted to meet.  Soon people began using paper lace to decorate chocolate boxes and Valentine cards.
5)    Gloves.  Years ago when a man proposed marriage to a woman he asked “for her hand”. The hand became the symbol of marriage and love. Soon gloves also became a symbol of love.
6)    Rings.  In some countries men and women exchange rings when they became  engaged or marry.  The ring usually had stone or jewel set in it. Diamonds are common in today rings.
7)    Love knot.  A love knot is a series of winding and interlacing loops with no beginning and no end. It is a symbol of endless love.  Often, a message was written on the love knot. The message had no beginning or end.
8)    Love birds and Doves.  Lovebirds are colorful parrots found in Africa. Most have red bills. They are called love birds because they sit closely together in pairs. Doves were thought to be favorite birds of Venus.   They are also symbols of Valentine’s Day.
9)    Cupid.  Son of Venus, goddess of love. He could cause people to fall in love by piercing them with one of his magic arrows.
